Confirming that it’s based on Silverlight and XNA, the mobile OS will fence off third-party apps from true native code but will give them access to all the key features: it will recognize accelerometers, cameras and multi-touch gestures. WP7 will also mirror iPhone development by using background push notification for those not allowed to multitask and include a general location service that any app can use….

If you are in your 30s, you may remember the popular arcade game “Street Fighter II.” I remember literally watching hours of people playing the game. (I rarely played the game; I mostly sucked but I wanted to save money). And now, you can get the latest version of the game right on your iPhone with Street Fighter IV [iTunes link] for $9.99.

Immediately, hardcore SF fans will see that there are only eight characters to choose from. In the normal SF IV game, there is a total of 19 playable characters. SF IV Producer Takeshi Tazuka says there are less characters because of the limited amount of CPU memory in the iPhone, 256MB of RAM for the 3GS and 128MB for the 3G.

Otherwise, this game really kicks (no pun intended). As far as onscreen controls go, this is one of the better ones. If you didn’t like touch controls before, this will not change your mind but it is more than adequate. Here’s a list of buttons: punch, kick, special attack and focus attack. The touch joystick is on the left. These are transparent on the screen and do cover up the players a little, but it hasn’t affected my enjoyment of the game.

I have a 3G and the game is so memory-intensive that I do experience crashes. 3GS and newer iPod Touch owners will probably do better.

For those who are new to the game, there is a dojo that will help you to learn the moves. There is also a free-sparring mode and a training room mode to help you perfect your combos and special attacks.

Other features include Bluetooth support for iPhone head-to-head combat and the ability to save your best games.

I’d say at $9.99 this game is a steal. Some may want to wait for a price drop, but SF fans should get this one immediately.

Building on the success of the critical hit puzzle game, Chromixa, for iPhone and iPod touch, Pure Square Go is delighted to announce that update 1.1 is now available. The full list of upgrades are; 22 new puzzles (70 total), new “Time Challenge” mini game (4 total), OpenFeint integration for online leaderboards & achievements, compete for the fastest level completion time and shake to reset. But that’s not all. A Lite version has also been released.

Beginning life as a digital art project, Chromixa 1.1.1 is the enchanting result of designer Simon Watson’s fascination with light. Inspired by noted artists such as James Clar and James Turrell, Chromixa’s first incarnation was a real life installation built from 100s of red, green and blue LEDs, a micro-controller, plexiglass, and one very creative brain.

With the concept of physically interactive light mixing at its core, Chromixa has gone through many evolutions, reaching its zenith as an exciting new puzzle genre on the App Store. The simplicity of blending primary colours and fitting tangram-style geometric shapes together offers a uniquely stimulating and addictive interactive experience.

Check it out on iTunes

If your iPad battery ever needs to be replaced due to an inability to properly hold a charge, Apple will just skip replacing the battery all together. Instead, you’ll receive another (most likely refurbished) iPad for $106.95. Any unauthorized modifications or damage may void your ability to use this service.

From Apple’s support site:

“If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.”

We’re not going to engage in too much wild speculation on this piece of information, but there are certainly a few raised eyebrows in Engadget-land right now. Apparently Plastic Logic is no longer offering pre-orders of its QUE proReader, as a tipster of ours discovered while trying to push through his order of the $799.99, 8GB / 3G version of the large-screen device. According to the order page “Pre-orders are sold out. QUE will be available online and in select Barnes & Noble stores this summer.” This of course comes on the heels of news that the company would be further delaying the ship date from mid-April to summer related to “fine-tuning” and “enhancing the overall product experience.” So our minds aren’t exactly at ease, as we’re trying to understand why a company wouldn’t just caveat pre-orders by letting people know there’s been a run on supply — though it’s possible that Plastic Logic is doing separate batches for mail order and in-store, and just needs to pace themselves. We’ve reached out to the company for comment, and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear back.

[Thanks, Clive]

The company behind the Web browser Opera is weeks away from submitting it to Apple’s iPhone store for approval, a spokesman said Friday. The result, according to the Norwegian company, would be a browser up to six times faster than the iPhone’s default Web tool, Safari. The open question is is whether Apple will approve the application.

The first time the creators of the humor blog Awkward Family Photos heard from one of their subjects, they were prepared to get an earful.

They did, but not like they expected.

“He said, ‘If you think that’s awkward, wait until you see this” and sent an even weirder picture, said Doug Chernack, who along with partner Mike Bender launched the blog last May.

Since then, the compendium of fashion disasters, crying babies and poorly considered poses has become a viral hit, drawing more than 100,000 visitors a day. And soon, it will be a book.

At the South By Southwest Interactive festival in Austin, Texas, Bender and Chernack announced the book is available for pre-order now and will be released May 4.

The “ultimate awkward family photo album” will include “Behind the Awkwardness” – interviews with some of the people pictured – as well as interviews with department-store portrait photographers who explain the origins of some of those ridiculous-looking poses.

About two-thirds of the photos in the book have never been shown on the Web site, according to Bender.

For the book, every single person pictured had to sign a release form, they said, including one family from Latvia who only has access to a fax machine once a month.

None of the subjects who gave their permission to be in the book asked to be paid, Bender said.

Since starting with about 10 family photographs, including some of their own, the pair of screenwriters from Los Angeles say they now get 200-300 a day from as far away as China, Russia and Brazil.

The key to getting people to share their less than glamorous moments? They say it’s their decision to avoid a mocking tone.

“We both kind of felt like we wanted to do this, but we wanted to do it in a way that had a more celebratory tone,” Bender said.

In fact, the lead image on the site Friday evening was a photo of Bender himself – kicking like a Rockette in skis with other family members.

With the book complete, Bender and Chernack said they have plans to expand their awkward online empire – but weren’t ready to give out any details.

“There is more awkwardness in the works,” Bender said. “The nice thing about awkwardness is it’s never-ending.”
